Ahmedabad, in the Gujarat region, is well-known for its hospitality. One of the main attractions is an abundance of food stalls and street restaurants. Gandhi lived in the city for a while, in the Sabarmati or Ghandhi Ashram, which is a popular destination for visitors. The city is full of temples and mosques, such as the Swaminarayan Temple, as well as world-class museums, one of the newest being Science City. Tips about the best time to visit Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is very hot from October to April, while winter temperatures range from 5 - 20°C. Monsoon season starts in mid-June, when many special foods are sold on the street. Many festivals and celebrations are held throughout the year. The arrival of spring is celebrated with Makar Sankranti in mid-January, followed by the kite flying festival, Uttarayan. Muharram sees the procession of Tajia, while the birth date of Lord Krishna, Rakshabandhan, is celebrated in August. Local Garba dances can be seen during the nine days of the Pooja Festival, held in September or October, and The Festival of Lights, Deepavali, is in October or November. The dates of Eid-al-Fitr, the end of Ramadam, and Eid-al-Adha vary from year to year.


Ahmedabad facts

Gujarati and Hindi are spoken in the city. Although a Muslim city, non-residents can obtain special permit allowing them to buy alcohol. Cheap Thali, or set meals, start at around Rs 100, while restaurant dishes cost from about Rs 250. The average price of a beer is Rs 100. Food in Ahmedabad is mainly vegetarian, with good markets for local produce on SG Road, as well as street food stalls in Manek Chowk Square.


Local travel and accommodation advice 

Travel to the city from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport can be made by taxi (with fares between Rs 300 - 400), autos (fares around Rs 150 - 200) or bus. For taxi and autos it is best to negotiate a price in advance.

Within the city, taxis are rare. Auto fares start at around Rs 20 + Rs 15 for every kilometre travelled. A 25% surcharge is added between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. On AMTS and BRTS buses a one-way fare ranges from about Rs 4 to Rs 36, depending on the distance. A day bus pass is good value and costs around Rs 45. BRTS buses are slightly more expensive, but faster. Buses do not run between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Cheap hostel accommodation can be found in the Old Town, East of Sabarmati, and costs from Rs 700, while mid-range hotels start at Rs 1,700. Luxury hotels are mainly located in the Navrangpura district, with the cost of a room starting at about Rs 3,400.
