Amsterdam Travel Guide

The capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is a fascinating city with its canals and rich artistic heritage. Beautiful architecture - much of it from the city's Golden Age in the 17th century - and 400km of cycling paths make this a unique place to visit.

Best Amsterdam festivals

Amsterdam is an all year tourist destination with moderate temperatures all 12 months of the year. However, the days are quite short during the winter months, with only 8 hours of daylight in mid-December. Tulips flower in the spring, making this a particularly popular time to visit. Spring is also the time for some major holidays such as King's Day (Koningsdag) which is celebrated April 27 (unless it falls on a Sunday, in which case celebrations are held on Saturday). Another important holiday is Bevrijdingsdag, always celebrated on May 5 in commemoration of the end of the occupation by Nazi Germany.

Note before you travel

Indian citizens will require a Visa for travel to the Netherlands. Applications can be made at the VFS Netherlands Visa Application Centres (an appointment is needed). Amsterdam is an expensive city and prices tend to rise in proximity to tourist attractions. Expect to pay in the range of EUR15 for a basic meal. Many establishments from snack bars to upscale restaurants feature the exotic cuisines of former Dutch colonies such as Indonesia, Suriname or the NL Antilles.

Local transfers and travel

There are a number of options for transportation from the airport to the city centre, including trains that run directly from the airport railway station to downtown in about 5 minutes (the cost is approximately EUR4). Bus 197 runs back and forth between Leidseplein (in central Amsterdam) and the airport, with the trip taking approximately 35 minutes. A taxi will cost about EUR50. When it comes to accommodations, a budget priced hostel costs about EUR20 per night for shared rooms while a hotel room starts at about EUR45. Taxis are quite expensive in Amsterdam, with a trip of about 10 minutes costing about EUR15-20. It is a good idea to ask for an estimate before the trip begins to avoid an unexpectedly high tariff. In contrast, a 24-hour day ticket for public transport costs only about EUR8 (approximately EUR3 for children age 4-11). The trams also sell single tickets.
