Useful information about the flight from Kolkata to Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad - major city in Gujarat
Ahmedabad is one of the most important cities in India, attracting visitors interested in discovering its rich history and enjoying the warm welcome of Gurajatis as well as many business travellers. From traditional monuments and religious buildings to museums and galleries, the Indian city offers visitors an opportunity to discover the culture of the state of Gujarat.
Best period to visit and things to do
The climate is generally very hot in Ahmedabad and it's recommended to visit in winter, when the temperatures are more comfortable. The monsoon starts from mid-June, and October to April would be the ideal period to travel. A wide range of social and religious festivals punctuate the year, starting in January with Makar Sankranti to celebrate spring, and the kite-flying festival of Uttarayan. Muharram includes the procession of Taija, while Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the Ramadan and the breaking of the fast. The monsoon season is also full of celebrations, with street stalls offering specific food. In August, Rakshabandhan honours brotherly and sisterly love, and Janmastami marks the birth of Krishna. In October-November, it's time for Deepavali, the festival of lights.
Tips and useful information before you go
While the local language is Gujarati, Hindi is also spoken in Ahmedabad. The city is home to Sabarmati Ashram, also known as Gandhi Ashram, which was one of Mahatma Gandhi's residences. Alcohol consumption is forbidden in the state of Gujarat but non-residents can obtain permits. When it comes to the cost of living, visitors can enjoy a cheap thali for about Rs 100, and a meal at a restaurant for around Rs 250. The food available is mostly vegetarian and many restaurants dot SG Road. The central square Manek Chowk is where you'll find various markets and food stalls.
Arrival, local accommodation, and public transportation
At the airport, visitors can take a taxi for around Rs 300-400 or an auto for about Rs 150-200. The fare needs to be negotiated in advance in both cases. Otherwise, a bus operated by AMTS is also available to reach the city centre. Various types of accommodation welcome travellers, including cheap hostels with rooms costing around Rs 700. Mid-range lodging are available for about Rs 1,700, or luxury hotels for approx. Rs 3,400, which can found in Navrangpura. Taxis are not widespread in Ahmedabad, and buses or autos are the main mode of public transportation. The fare for autos has to be negotiated before the ride, but the start rate is ca. Rs 20 and about Rs 15 for every kilometre. The price increases by 25% between 11pm and 6am. As for buses, the fare for a one-way journey varies between Rs 4 and Rs 36, depending on the route. Day passes are also available for around Rs 45. It is worth noting that services operated by BRTS are much faster than AMTS buses, and that the fares are higher. Also, there is no service from 11pm to 6am.
