Goa's official language is Konkani although Hindu and Marathi are also spoken. The region is highly popular during festivals so it is worth booking hotels and transport well in advance for the Carnival, Ganesh Chaturthi or Christmas/New Year.
Goa is inexpensive compared to New Delhi, and visitors might pay about Rs 150 for a cheap thali or Rs 400 for a meal in a restaurant. Many shops close for siesta between 13.30 pm to 15.30 pm and in Panaji most shops close at about 8 in the evening.

Most visitors arrive at Goa International Airport. Pre-paid taxis are the most common way to reach destinations in the state and official taxi rates are displayed outside the arrivals area. Passengers may pay around Rs 700 to Panjim, Rs 1,000 to Anjuna, Rs 1,400 to Aramabol and Rs 1,500 to Agonda. Fares should be agreed in advance for regular taxis and autos.
Accommodation ranges from the simple to the luxurious and Rs 700 is about standard for a basic room. Mid-range rooms are likely to cost around Rs 2,500 while those opting for luxury hotels should expect to pay about Rs 4,000.
Buses operated by the Kadamba Transport Corp. charge a minimum fare of around Rs 3 for a 2 km journey plus about Rs 1 for every additional kilometre. Those wishing to travel around the state will find that bus fares range from approximately Rs 8 - 10 or Rs 10 - 15 for trips of 30 to 40 km. Taxi and auto fares should always be negotiated before the outset of the journey. This also applies to motorcycle taxis.
