Istanbul - planning to go

Food is cheapest in the form of street food, nevertheless groceries are quite a bit more expensive than in India. Yet, Istanbul offers an incredible variety of street food at good prices like kebabs for around 8 TRY or assorted snacks for 2 TRY. Beer costs about 6 TRY. Also, remember that haggling is a long standing tradition. Goods at markets and bazaars are overpriced as haggling is expected.

Arriving at your destination

There are several options for getting from airport to central Istanbul: take the metro M1 for about 4 TRY, the HAVATA shuttle bus for around 11 TRY and taxis for approximately 60 TRY. Keep in mind that buses do not run from 1 am to 4 am so plan accordingly if your flight lands around that time.

Good yet basic accommodation can be found at hostels or guest houses for about 30 TRY a night. There is actually a wide choice of places to stay depending on the district you are visiting. Once settled you can move around the city taking advantage of the excellent public transport system. An Istanbulkart, rechargeable and valid for all public transport, would be a useful card to acquire if staying a little longer, considering taxis are expensive. You will be able to visit Istanbul's many beautiful sights easily, like the Prince Islands, which are car free.
