Ahmedabad travel tips

Unique Global City

Ahmedabad is a sensory masterpiece, with a collection of sights, sounds, and flavours like no other city. Modern yet traditional, global yet authentic, there's something for everyone in this great Indian metropolis.

A place for all seasons

Ahmedabad is the sort of place that throbs with life all throughout the year. Be careful during summer months, though - the city can get very hot. Many visitors say that the best time to visit is between April and October, when temperatures stay mild, sometimes dropping down to the five degrees. If you happen to be around during January, you'll witness the great Makar Sankranti, a festival welcoming the arrival of spring. Meanwhile other months have their own special celebrations, which often come with their own distinct dishes. Street food is tasty, fresh and affordable throughout the city. The Festival of Lights takes place from October to November, making it the perfect time for a romantic getaway. Another popular festival, the kite flying festival, takes place on the 14 and 15 of January.

Preparing for your adventure

To really make the most of your stay in Ahmedabad, consider studying the local language before you take off. In Ahmedabad, the majority of residents speak Gujarti, although Hindi is also spoken. English is also fairly common, especially in tourist areas. As for the cost of living once you arrive, prices are fairly reasonable, considering the size of the city. If you look for a good deal, meals should sit at around 100 rRupees, while a restaurant will often charge 250. A good beer can usually be found for around 100 rupees. Of course, highly rated establishments will charge more, as Ahmedabad does have a significant population of higher earners. Gujarat does, however have a no alcohol policy - permits can be applied for by non-residents.

On the ground

Once you arrive in Ahmedabad, it's recommended to keep some things in mind to avoid scams. A taxi from the airport to the city centre should fall within 300-400 rupees, but this price needs to be negotiated. Remember that if all else fails there will always be another taxi driver. Ahmedabad also has many auto drivers. These are cheaper, at around 150 rupees. You can also get to the city centre using Ahmedabad's MTS system. When looking for a place to stay, expect cheap places to sit at around 700 rupees, mid-range at 1,400, and luxury at 3,400. Once within the city, most people get around using buses and autos, which are economical if you negotiate. Expect a base rate of 20 rupees, with 15 rupees added every kilometre. Vegetarians can rest easy in Ahmedabad, as there are plenty of no-meat options throughout the city.
