Bangalore, known as India's "Silicon Valley," is a popular business destination, but the Southern Indian city also makes an ideal vacation spot. Bangalore has many colourful local festivals throughout the year, plus, there are dozens of restaurants that serve the local Udupi cuisine.

Bangalore is a wonderful destination any time of the year, but the ideal time to visit is between October and March so you can avoid Monsoon season. The winter months of November through January have the coolest temperatures with an average of 15 degrees Celsius in December. The summer months of February through April have the hottest temperatures with an average of 36 degrees Celsius in April. Another popular festival is the Bangalore Karaga festival dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Draupadi, which takes place for nine days in March or April. The Someshwara car festival in April and the Karnakata Rajyotsava, which is a public holiday held on Nov 1, are also popular.

Bangalore is the capital of the Karnataka province. The official language is Kannada, but Hindi is widely spoken. Bangalore has lots of affordable dining options. A cheap Thali plate costs around 100 rupees while visitors can get a full restaurant meal for 300 rupees. Another money saving tip is to seek out free WiFi, which is offered in certain areas of Bangalore.

Transport tips

There are plenty of transportation options from Bangalore airport to the city centre. Visitors can grab a bus for between 50-250 rupees or they can order a cab, which will cost between 700-1,000 rupees for a metered taxi or around 1,200 rupees for a pre-paid taxi. There are also plenty of travel options for getting around Bangalore. A day pass for some buses costs 40 rupees, while most taxis have a flat rate of 150 rupees for anywhere in Bangalore, although the taxis must be booked in advance. Visitors can also take an auto for a minimum charge of 25 rupees although many companies add on extra expenses for miles driven, night use, and heavy luggage. Hotel prices range from 700 rupees for a cheap hotel to 4,000 rupees for luxury accommodation.
