New Delhi travel tips

Diverse Delhi

From the Red Fort to the elegant Lodi Gardens, Delhi is simply filled with architecture and historical sites that will blow your mind. Dazzling contemporary restaurants offering innovative cuisine are side by side with traditional markets.

Travel when the weather is mild

February and March, and October and November are the best months for visiting Delhi as during these months the weather is at its most pleasant. Summer runs from April to June and is often too hot to get out and about much: temperatures tend to run to 40 degrees centigrade and more. The monsoon season is from December to January and during this season it can be difficult to travel due to flooded roads. That said, if you do visit in November or December you can enjoy the beautiful Qutub cultural festival.

Two tips for before you travel

Women especially should be cautious when travelling alone at night in Delhi. Plan your route, let friends know where you are going, and make sure that you have a safe and reputable form of transport that you can use. Secondly, make sure to increase your budget when you visit Delhi, as the cost of living here is higher than that of most other Indian cities. Booking accommodation in advance is highly advisable: guest houses range from 500 rupees for a bargain option to 1400 rupees for a more luxurious set of rooms.

Getting around Delhi with ease

When you arrive at the airport, simply get line 2 of the metro to the town centre. This lines runs from just after 4.30 am to 23.30 pm and costs in the region of 100 rupees. Pre-booking and pre-paying for a taxi is another option, as is taking the airport shuttle bus to Connaught Place. Many hotels do offer to collect travellers from the airport, so it is wise to check if your hotel offers this service.

Buses, metros, autos and rickshaws are all available to take you around the city once you are there. When taking an auto, haggle to get the best price and ensure that you have agreed the price with your driver before you depart. Tourist cards are available, offering transport for either one day or three days at a discount. Buses can be very crowded in this city.
