Gateway city to heritage
Known as the City of Gates, Aurangabad draws many leisure travellers wanting to discover the rich history of India's Maharashtra state. There are many UNESCO World heritage sites in the area, including the Ajanta and Ellora caves. However, the city also has many shopping centres, restaurants and other modern comforts.
When to visit and events to enjoy
The most popular time of year to visit Aurangabad is during winter, between October and February, when average temperatures are about 22C. The region can get hot in summer, which runs from March to May, followed by the monsoon season between June and September. There are special events all through the year, including the Aurangabad Festival, a celebration of music and arts staged at the end of December. Diwali is celebrated in October and November, while other occasions observed include Shivaji Jayanti and Khultabad Urs in May and Ganesh Chaturthi, in August and September. Another major celebration marks Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, which takes place on varying dates.
Points to bear in mind before travelling
If you are planning to eat out during your stay, a cheap Thali will cost about Rs. 150, while a meal in a restaurant could be priced at around Rs. 200. Although the main language spoken in Aurangabad is Marathi, many people also speak Hindi and Urdu.
Finding a place to stay and getting around
The only options for transfer from airport to the city are to travel by auto or taxi. An auto fare to the rail station is likely to be ca Rs. 150, but it is best to arrange the fare with the driver beforehand. Prepaid taxi fares vary, depending on the route, but could be around Rs. 15 for first 1.5 km, with an extra Rs. 15 for every extra km. When travelling around the city, the minimum fare for taxis and autos is approximately Rs. 8 for 2 km, with another Rs. 8 for every additional km travelled. However, it is advisable to negotiate fares in advance. The operator of local buses is MSRTC. Most budget hotels are in the central area of Aurangabad or near the station, while hotels offering more luxurious accommodation are near the airport. Pricings could be around Rs. 3,500. at the luxury end, Rs. 2,000 for a mid-priced hotel or Rs. 700 for a night in a cheap hotel.
