Though rain is always possible, London enjoys a mild climate throughout the year with higher temperatures from May to September. Visit for Notting Hill Carnival over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Chinese Year in February or the London Marathon and boat race in April. Many shops and amenities close over Christmas, 25th and 26th December, and at Easter in March or April.
Indian citizens need a visa for UK visits, which can be obtained from Visa Application Centres. A London congestion charge of about £11 per day must be paid to drive in designated inner city zones between 7 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday. Prices in London are far higher than in India and a meal in a fairly inexpensive restaurant can cost about £15. London is also more expensive than other UK cities.
There are excellent transport connections from local airports to central London. Heathrow Airport: The cheapest option is the Underground. The 30-minute journey on the Piccadilly line costs about £6 and trains leave from terminals 1, 2 and 3. The Heathrow Express to Paddington station is fastest. Trains take 15 minutes from terminals 1, 2 or 3 and a ticket is about £26. Taxis cost about £33 and take about 40 minutes. Gatwick airport: The Gatwick Express train from South Terminal takes about 30 minutes to reach Victoria Station and single fares are around £18. A taxi with 4 people sharing should be around £22.50 each and the journey takes about 1 hour. Stansted Airport: Stansted Express trains to Liverpool Street station take approximately 40 minutes and fares are around £12. A taxi will charge about £100 for the 1 hour trip. Luton airport: The shuttle bus from Luton Airport Parkway connects with the train to St. Pancras Station. The journey takes around 40 minutes and costs about £15. A cheap hostel might cost about £20 while hotels are upwards of £40 per night. A single ticket for London buses, trains and underground costs about £5.70 while one day Travelcards are £12 to £15. Oyster cards give a discount on travel and the £5 deposit is refundable.
