Bangkok is world renowned for its bustling street scenes, contrasts, beautiful shrines and an unforgettable night life. The economy thrives on tourist attractions such as long tail boat rides through the floating markets, delicious local dishes and vibrant cabaret shows.

Deciding when to go and what to do

Bangkok enjoys warm temperatures 12 months of the year, but the cooler season (Nov-Feb) is usually the most pleasant. Thai culture is well-known for its colourful and vibrant festivals, especially the Loy Krathong festival (usually in November), where thousands of moon shrines are released onto the rivers. The street parties of April's Songkran festival are also very popular.

Important things to know before you go

There are basic visa-related requirements such as a valid passport for 6 months upon date of entry. You'll be asked for your proof of return ticket, as well as a fee of ca. 1000 baht upon entry to the country, in addition to proof of 10,000 THB in funds per person per visit. The basic Thai currency is the baht, and while groceries are 20% - 30% more expensive than in India, a meal out tends to be slightly cheaper than in Delhi. You should consult your doctor concerning recommended vaccinations before visiting, such as Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhus, Rabies, Diphtheria and Malaria prophylaxis.

Planning your Bangkok visit

Upon landing, the Airport Rail Link transport system stops regularly at the airport and will take you directly to the terminal. The Airport Link Express is a direct train linked to central Bangkok for about 100THB. Alternatively you can opt to take the Airport Link City Line that takes longer due to stops along the way, but it is slightly cheaper.

The most popular hotel accommodation areas for tourists are the Sukhumvit Road and Khao-San Road areas and Chinatown. You can expect to pay 360THB and upwards per night for accommodation in Bangkok.

While sightseeing it is recommended that tourists travel with taxis which are a popular, fast and inexpensive, or take the metro. Travelling on a public bus can be an interesting experience and it is cheap, but tourists have a hard time understanding the system. The tuk tuks (rickshaws) are an expensive tourist-directed luxury, and more appropriate for special occasions than actual travelling around the city.
