Local Information about Dhaka

When looking for transport from the airport to the city centre, remember that Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is 20 km north of Dhaka. Take the shared shuttle Public Airport Bus from the airport road (5 mins from airport) around BDT 10 to Gulistan Bus station. This service runs until around 8:00 pm. Buses are overcrowded, so avoid them if you have bulky luggage. Taxis cost about BDT 400 and the journey takes around 30 minutes (if no meter, then be sure to agree on the fare before setting off). There is an airport departure tax of BDT300, mostly included in ticket prices.

A bed in a cheap hotel runs around Tk 60, while average priced rooms in more comfortable hotels run around Tk 4,100.

Available forms of local transportation include cycle rickshaws for short distances. These cost between about Tk 30 to 50 (15 minutes), but make sure to negotiate fares beforehand. With auto rickshaws (CNGs), you can go a metered 8 km for about TK 150-250. It is Tk 25 for the first 2 km, then Tk 7 per km. Taxis are metered from Tk 25, but you can negotiate on this. Note that yellow taxis have air conditioning. Buses run on the main roads and are crowded and not for the faint hearted. Buy tickets at the special bus counters beforehand. Buses are slower than CNGs; journeys can generally be very slow due to the roads being very congested.
