Useful information about the flight from Mumbai to Dhaka
Visit Tropical Dhaka
Plan to visit Dhaka for its culture and tropical weather.
Best of Dhaka for travellers
Dhaka enjoys a humid tropical climate. The monsoon season runs from May to September. Tropical storms are known to occur from April to June, making the best time to visit between September and March.
Plan to visit during the city's many cultural festivals, including the Dhaka Art Summit in February and Chobi Mela, a photography festival at the end of January. The Dhaka World Music Festival in February is also worthwhile visiting. There are also numerous religious festivals to enjoy, such as the Islamic festivals of Eid el Fitr and Adha. Check out the Hindu festival Kali Puja as well (the date varies based on the lunar calendar).
Before You Go to Dhaka
Visas are needed when visiting Dhaka. For Indian Citizens, a passport must be valid for three months at least. For a maximum 30-day tourist visit, visas may be applied for on arrival, but please check with the Embassy.
Up-to-date routine inoculations are necessary, including those against Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Other vaccines recommended are Cholera, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies. There is a low risk of malaria in Dhaka.
Bengali is the main language here. Urdu/Hindu are also spoken in some parts. There is a very low cost of living in Dhaka. Food in restaurants costs from about Tk 60. Gulshan/Banani/Baridhara are areas for upmarket restaurants.
Local Information about Dhaka
When looking for transport from the airport to the city centre, remember that Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is 20 km north of Dhaka. Take the shared shuttle Public Airport Bus from the airport road (5 mins from airport) around BDT 10 to Gulistan Bus station. This service runs until around 8:00 pm. Buses are overcrowded, so avoid them if you have bulky luggage. Taxis cost about BDT 400 and the journey takes around 30 minutes (if no meter, then be sure to agree on the fare before setting off). There is an airport departure tax of BDT300, mostly included in ticket prices.
A bed in a cheap hotel runs around Tk 60, while average priced rooms in more comfortable hotels run around Tk 4,100.
Available forms of local transportation include cycle rickshaws for short distances. These cost between about Tk 30 to 50 (15 minutes), but make sure to negotiate fares beforehand. With auto rickshaws (CNGs), you can go a metered 8 km for about TK 150-250. It is Tk 25 for the first 2 km, then Tk 7 per km. Taxis are metered from Tk 25, but you can negotiate on this. Note that yellow taxis have air conditioning. Buses run on the main roads and are crowded and not for the faint hearted. Buy tickets at the special bus counters beforehand. Buses are slower than CNGs; journeys can generally be very slow due to the roads being very congested.
