Optimal weather and attractions in Dhaka
To enjoy Dhaka at its best opt to travel outside the monsoon and tropical storm times, ideally between September-March. However, many of the cultural and religious festivals fall outside the ideal weather time and will still make for a memorable visit. For art, photography and music festivals, these occur in January and February.
Things to know before you get to Dhaka
Before arriving in Dhaka there may be inoculations which are needed. Check with your medical professional to make sure you are vaccinated against hepatitis A, tetanus, diphtheria and Typhoid. Ask your doctor whether they would suggest a vaccination for cholera, hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis or Rabies. There is only a slight risk of Malaria in Dhaka.
Bengali is the national language but you may also hear Hindu and Urdu spoken as well.
A visa is needed to visit Bangladesh and these can be done on arrival in Dhaka. The tourist visa is only for 30 days. With a low cost of living, you can eat out for about tk 60.
Dhaka: arriving, accommodation and local transport
Arriving at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport puts you 20km north of the city. Your can opt to take a shared shuttle which is preferred if you have large suitcases. The buses are likely to be crowded and cost roughly tk10 to the city centre. These run until 8pm in the evening.
Depending on the type of accommodation you require, you can find a room in an inexpensive hotel for around Tk 60 with the price for an average hotel in the region of Tk 4,100
When travelling around Dhaka be aware that there is congestion and it may take longer than you anticipate. For short distances, jump into a cycle rickshaw which will cost about tk30-50. Always get a price before setting off. This also is applicable to taxi fares which start around tk25. It is worth noting that the yellow taxis have air conditioning which is worth paying for during hot and humid times of the year.
