Frankfurt is a year-round destination, although the weather varies greatly from cold, wet winters where the temperatures can dip to -10 °C to warm, pleasant summers when they can rise to 25 °C. The city comes alive with major festivals in the winter and early spring, including Carnival in February/March - also called the "fifth season" - and Dippemess, a huge traditional festival that takes place in March/April.

Before you go: the essentials

Indian citizens will require a Schengen Visa. The city is served by two airports. Frankfurt Main Airport is quite close to the city centre itself and easily accessible by public transit. Frankfurt Hahn Airport is popular with budget carriers. It is located about 2 hours road travel west of the city and served by buses. Cpmpared to India, the cost of living is considerably higher in Frankfurt, with the bill for a basic meal in the range of 10EUR.

When you get to Frankfurt

Public transport is efficient and the best way to get around the city, being much faster and less costly than taxis. Trains from the Frankfurt Main Airport to the city centre include the S8, S9 or RE80. The trip will take approximately 15 minutes at a cost of about 4.50EUR - and remember to buy your tickets from the vending machine prior to boarding. A taxi ride takes longer at about 20 or 30 minutes. You can find hostel accommodation starting at about 20EUR per person for a shared room and a hotel room at about 50EUR per person. Frankfurt hosts many major trade fairs, including the Motor Show in September and the Book Trade Fair in mid-October when hotel rooms are at a premium. Early bookings are advised.
