Amsterdam travel tips

Magical northwestern European capital

Amsterdam is a wonderful destination that is well known for its beautiful and numerous canals, but also its thriving cultural scene. Visitors to the capital of Netherlands enjoy world-class museums, admirable architecture, and an exciting nightlife.

When to visit and what to see

The Dutch capital benefits from moderate temperatures in all seasons, which makes it possible to enjoy a visit at any time of the year. Days are much shorter in the winter though, with about 8 hours of daylight in mid-December. In the spring, visitors can attend various events and festivals, including tulip season, Koningsdag, celebrating the King on April 27th; or Bevrijdingsdag on May 5th, commemorating the end of Nazi occupation.

Things to know before travelling

Indian citizens need a visa to travel to the Netherlands, which can be obtained through VFS Netherlands Visa Application Centres by appointment.

Before boarding taxis, visitors should confirm the price with the driver to avoid paying too high a fare.

The international food scene in the capital includes restaurants serving cuisine from former colonies such as Suriname, Indonesia, and the Netherlands Antilles. Keep in mind that the cost of life is quite high, especially around tourist areas. Travellers can expect to pay around EUR15 for a basic meal. Also, the free ferry "het pontje", leaving from behind the main train station, crosses the IJ River and reaches the NDSM cultural centre.
