Bangkok is one of Asia's largest and most bustling cities with a wide array of temples, palaces, canals, and markets from a variety of time periods - not to mention the vibrant and bustling nightlife. Bangkok truly has something for everyone.

Best Bangkok attractions and tips

The best time to visit Bangkok is during the cooler season, running from November to February. Be sure to avoid the monsoon season which runs from June till November. Some key dates to remember include Wan Trut Chin (the New Year), which takes place each February (based on the Chinese calendar so dates will vary. Other important dates include April 13-15th, which is April Songkran (Thai New Year celebrations), and the Loi Krathong Festival of Lights which takes place in November.

Facts to help you prepare

Before you travel be sure that your passport is valid for at least six months from date of entry. Visa can be applied for on entry for tourist visas of 30 days or less. Visitors must have proof of a return flight and funds of 10,000 THB per person per visit. A fee of 1,000 THB is also payable upon entry.

It is recommended that you get the following vaccines before travelling to Bangkok: Hepatitis A, Typhus, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Rabies, and Malaria prophylaxis. Be sure to consult your doctor.

The prices of groceries are mostly higher in Bangkok than in India - about 20% to 30% higher. However, a meal out in a basic restaurant is slightly cheaper compared to eating out in Delhi at a cost of around 60 baht.

Bangkok travel facts

The Airport Rail Link stops regularly at the airport with direct access to the terminal. BKK to central Bangkok using the Airport Link Express (direct train) costs about 100 THB, either change here or take a taxi. Airport Link City Line (with stops) takes longer and is slightly cheaper.

Accommodation prices range from around 360 THB upwards. Popular areas for hotels include Sukhumvit Road area, Chinatown, Khao-San-Road area.

Public buses are cheap but hard to get your head around, the metro is cheap and easier to use, taxis are popular, fast and also cheap. Tuk tuks (rickshaws) are tourist traps and expensive, so be sure to avoid them if possible.
