Goa travel tips
Explore the beachside paradise of Goa
Known for its amazing music and beautiful white sand beaches, Goa is a fantastic place to come for a leisurely break. Join in with the party or marvel at the natural beauty: it is up to you.
When is the best time to travel to Goa?
Winter (mid November to mid February) is generally the best time to visit Goa. In winter the temperatures are around a pleasant 28 degrees centigrade. If possible, avoid the monsoon season in June. Visiting during the Goa Carnival in February is a great idea. Other cultural highlights to catch include Ganesha Chaturthi in August/September, Diwali in October/November, Christmas in December and Easter in April.
Hints and tips before you arrive
Why not learn a few words of Konkani, the official language of Goa? Hindi and Marathi are also widely spoken here, so communicating should not be a problem. If planning to travel to Goa during one of the festivals mentioned above, make sure to book early as prices can get high and accommodation can be booked up quickly around these times. When planning how much cash to take with you to Goa, it can be helpful to know that the cost of living here is generally cheaper than in New Delhi. A cheap thali will cost around Rs. 150 whilst a restaurant meal will be around 400 Rs.
Handy information to know about the local area
Many people choose to take a taxi from the airport to the city centre. A pre-paid taxi is a good option here, as you know what you are paying in advance: the journey will usually cost something between 700 Rs. and 1,500 Rs. depending on how far you are going. An official taxi rate board is displayed in the arrivals section of the airport. If travelling by non pre-paid taxi, make sure to negotiate the fare in advance. Buses are generally a cheap way to travel whilst the cheapest option of all is motorcycle taxi. From 13.30-15.30 the siesta slows Goa down. Shops generally shut during this time before opening again for the rest of the day until around 8pm. Accommodation can cost around 700 Rs. for a basic room to 1,500 Rs. for a more luxurious place to stay.
