Hyderabad travel tips

Tradition meets modernity in Southern India

Hyderabad is a bustling city with a long history and strong traditions that is becoming a hub for IT professionals. Attracting both business and leisure travellers, the capital of the state of Telangana offers a journey through time, from the old city to the CBD, with numerous religious and historical buildings, lakes and parks as well as museums.

When to visit and what to do

Because summer, from March until June, is very hot and the monsoon season starts in July, the best period to travel to Hyderabad is between October and March. At this time, the weather is sunny and mild, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. A number of religious and cultural events are held throughout the year, including Hindu celebrations such as Bonalu in July/August, Ganesh Chaturthi in August/September, or Diwali in October, and Muslim holidays like Eid al-Fitr (end of the Ramadan) and Eid al Adha. Dates vary according to the respective calendars.

Useful information before your trip

Telugu is the official language in the state of Telangana. However, Urdu is widely spoken, as well as Hindi. Those two languages are usually spoken in dialect, though. In terms of cost of living, the prices in Hyderabad are much lower than in New Delhi, and visitors can eat a meal for around Rs 250 in a restaurant or even find thalis at about Rs 120.

Airport arrival, onward travel and accommodation

To reach central Hyderabad from the airport, it is possible to take an air conditioned Pushpak shuttle for around Rs 100-250 one-way. Otherwise, radio taxis are available in front of the arrivals terminal and the fare is about Rs 40 per kilometre. At night, from 11pm to 5am, a 25% surcharge is applied to the base price. Accommodation in the City of Pearls is varied and ranges from cheap (about Rs 1,000) to average (around Rs 2,000) and luxury (approx. Rs 3,500). When it comes to public transport, buses are operated by APSRTC and a ticket costs about Rs 20 at least, but the vehicles are often crowded. Alternatives are taxis and autos, with a minimum fare starting at around Rs 20 for 2 kilometres and Rs 10 for every additional kilometre. Visitors should always negotiate prices before boarding those taxis and autos.
