An historic town with a rich past

Kozhikode is a prosperous city in Southern India with an idyllic setting on the Arabian Sea. It has quiet beaches, surrounding hills and green countryside. There are many historical sites and monuments that evoke its "City Of Spices" trading post past.

Also known as Calicut, Kozhikode is a city in the state of Kerala in southern India on the Malabar Coast. Mananchira Square is a park in the centre of Kozhikode. This historic area has been converted into a park with trees, plants, shrubs, and an open-air theatre. The Connolly Canal is part of the West Coast canal system. The canal runs through the city.

Kozhikode's attractions and tips.

The mild weather from December to March make those months a good time to visit. Kozhikode's climate is humid and tropical, being very hot from March until May. The Monsoon season is from June until September and October until November. 

Visit for festivals and experience local culture. The Hindu festival, Diwali, is celebrated in style at the end of October. Holi is also celebrated at that time. Shivarathri Utsavam happens in October in the Mahaganapathy temple. Malabar Mahotsavam is celebrated for 5 days in January with music, dance and drama.

The Malabar cuisine is world renowned. Traditionally it is served on a banana leaf and dishes frequently contain coconut and spices. Tamarind is often added to food and seafood features strongly in this coastal region. Try Malabar Biriyani and Calicut Halwa. Kozhikode is inexpensive  compared to Delhi. A basic meal in a restaurant costs about  50 rupees.

Using Kozhikode transport

Calicut International Airport is 28 km from Kozhikode in Karipur.
The airport bus number 747 travels from the airport to the central city. It costs about Rs3-4 per kilometre. The bus leaves the Kondotty bus stand which is 2 km from the airport. Hotel rooms near the beach are most pleasant as due to the heavy traffic in the city the air is hot and dusty.  There is a wide range of accommodation with budget being available from about Rs500. Luxury hotel rooms cost around Rs4,200. There is a public bus network. Buses cost Rs7 for 3 km. A rickshaw ride is priced at around Rs15 per km. Taxis operate on a flat rate basis.
