Kozhikode in Kerala, a place to unwind and relax
Situated on the coast, the city of Kozhikode was once known as Calicut and has been a beautiful and prosperous part of southern India for centuries due to the traditional spice trading and the lushness of the countryside. Affluent and relaxed, the city centre is busy, but the beaches are an ideal spot for a winter holiday and may holidaymakers come here to get away from big city life. Try a visit to Mananchira, which is a man made freshwater lake fed by a natural spring and is a relaxing place to walk around. Seafood and fish curry is good here, and the food generally is fresh and spicy.
Best Kerala seasons
The best time to go is in the mild, warm, weather which is from December till March. The rest of the year Kozhikode's climate is humid and tropical, and it's very hot from March until May, when the Monsoon arrives. This lasts from June until September and October, sometimes until November. Kerala is largely Hindu - relaxed and colourful. The usual Hindu festivals such as Diwali, which is at the end of October, and Holi, are all celebrated. There's also 'Shivarathri Utsavam' in October in the 'Mahaganapathy Temple', and 'Malabar Mahotsavam', which lasts 5 days in January and has music, dance and drama.
Things to note before you go
The region of Malabar has a renowned cuisine and reputation for good food, Malabar Biriyani and Calicut Halwa are especially recommended. Kozhikode is also cheap compared to Delhi. For example, a basic meal out will cost less than half the price as in Delhi, running at roughly 50 rupees.
Getting about locally.
Calicut International Airport is 28 km from Kozhikode in Karipur and there an a number of transport options. The airport bus '747' costs about 3-4 Rs per km from Kondotty bus stand, which is 2 km from the airport, and some hotels provide their own transport. Hotel rooms near the beach are the most pleasant and better as they are away from the heavy traffic in the city. Budget accommodation is available from about Rs.500, and the price goes up to Rs. 4,200 for hotels with more comfort. Local buses cost Rs.7 for 3km. Local auto prices are around Rs15 per km. Taxis have flat rates for different destinations.
