Lying on the Malabar Coast, Kozhikode is a city with a rich heritage and many beautiful historic buildings. Visitors are attracted by its beaches and wildlife, as well as its wide range of shops and restaurants.

Travel to Kozhikode for holidays and festivals

All the main Hindu festivals are celebrated across the city annually. They include Shivarathri Utsavam, with a ceremony in the Mahaganapathy temple, and Diwali, both in October. There are dance, music and drama events over a five-day period in January to celebrate Malabar Mahotsavam.   

The mildest time of year is between December and March, making this the most popular time to visit. Kozhikode has a tropical climate, with the highest temperatures between March and May. The monsoon season runs from June to September and October to November. 

Tips before you set off

Prices in Kozhikode are far lower than those in Delhi, with a simple restaurant meal costing about 50 rupees, half the price you might pay in the capital. The region's cookery is renowned and Calicut Halwa and Malabar Biriyani are among the most popular dishes. 

Travel and accommodation options

Buses, rickshaws and taxis are all available for travel around the city, with varying charges. A bus fare could cost you around Rs.7 for a 3km journey, while a rickshaw ride costs about Rs.15 for each km travelled. Taxi fares are charged at a flat rate.  

If you are flying into Calicut International Airport, it is actually in Karipur, about 28 km from Kozhikode. You can travel into the city by taking the airport bus 747. Tickets are approximately Rs3-4 per km for travel from the Kondotty bus stand, which is two kilometres away from the main airport - use a shuttle to get there from the terminal. 

Travel in the city centre can be heavy, which means many visitors find it a better choice to book accommodation in hotels on the coast, beside the Kozhikode beaches. You could expect to pay about 4,200 rupees for a luxury room in a hotel, but there is also lower-priced accommodation available with prices starting at about 500 rupees for a night.
