Cultural adventure in Aurangabad
If it's history, culture and World Heritage Sites you enjoy while on holiday, visit the Indian city of Aurangabad. In the State of Maharashtra, Aurangabad is a popular tourist destination with plenty of interesting things to do and see with attractions like the Ajanta Caves, Devgiri Fort and the Ghrishneshwar Temple.
Aurangabad at its most pleasant
The best time to visit Aurangabad is during the winter months of October to February. At this time of year the temperature isn't too hot with an average of 22 degrees Centigrade. The summer months from March to May are extremely hot, even for the friendly locals. It's advisable to avoid travelling during the monsoon season which is usually from June to September. The city is also host to most major Hindu and Muslim Festivals such as the Aurangabad Festival at the end of December which is celebrated with music and arts. Diwali is held in October and November. Ganesh Chaturthi takes place in August and September while Shivaji Jayanti and Khultabad Urs are in May. Dates vary for the End of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr.
Aurangabad - good to know....
Before you travel to Aurangabad why not try to learn something about the language. The main language is Marathi although Hindi and Urdu are also widely spoken. The cost of living here is cheap compared to the UK with Thali costing about Rs 150 and restaurant meals approximately Rs 200.
Aurangabad airport transport and more
Transport from the airport to the city centre is also reasonably priced. Only taxis or autos are available from the airport. Pre-paid taxi fares from and to the airport depend on the route taken. Taxi fares are around Rs 15 for the first 1.5 km and then Rs 15 for every extra km after that. Prices for an auto to and from the train station are about Rs 150. It's best to negotiate the price with the driver before boarding. Regarding accommodation, expect to pay around Rs 700 for cheap, Rs 2000 for mid-price and Rs 3500 for luxury rooms. Most budget hotels are conveniently situated close to the train station and the city centre. Top luxury hotel accommodation can be found near the airport. To get around town, minimum fares for taxis and autos are approximately Rs 8 for 2 km and Rs 8 for every additional km. The local bus operator is MSRTC, expect to pay around Rs 13 upwards for a bus ticket.
