Optimal travel time and tips
With moderate temperatures, Amsterdam is enchanting year round. Winter has shorter days with only 8 hours of daylight in mid December. Things really come alive in spring with the arrival of vast numbers of tulips in an array of colours. The city becomes a sea of orange on April 27th for King's Day (Koningsdag), which is formerly Queen's Day. Celebrations are held the previous day if King's Day falls on a Sunday. Locals and tourist alike watch the parade of boats as they fill the canals in celebration. Bevrijdinsdag is on May 5th and celebrates the end of Nazi occupation. The festival has Dutch and international musical acts throughout the city. Museums are plentiful and popular with tourists.
