A visit to Goa, in Western India, is ideal for an enjoyable, revitalising vacation. The area, on the coastline of the Arabian Sea, is known for its beautiful beaches. Stimulating cultural activities

The Goa Carnival is a celebration held in February. Known for its extravagance, it provides a combination of music, dancing and food and is the only one of its kind in India. During three days, the parades, costumes and floats are a sight to behold. Another source of entertainment is the Ganesha Chaturthi festival held in September to celebrate the Hindu god Ganesh, the elephant-headed remover of obstacles and god of new beginnings and enlightenment. This holiday encompasses prayer and celebration. October presents Diwali, a five day festival of lights. In addition to traditional feasts, this display of candles, colourful lights and huge fireworks exhibits focuses on the triumph of light over the darkness.  Remember to secure travel arrangements and accomodation early to participate.


Embracing Goa's culture

Although its official language is Konkani, Marathi and Hindu are also spoken. The cost of living in this state is lower than New Delhi. Inexpensive thali is available for about Rs 150. Dining in one of the over 2,000 restaurants in Goa costs around Rs 400, and can be enjoyed overlooking the Sea or inland. Local favourites or international cuisines are both available.
 
 

Getting around Goa

Rates from Goa International Airport to various cities are conveniently posted outside arrivals. Travelling to Panjim is around Rs 700, Anjuna about Rs 1,000 and getting to Agonda will cost about Rs 1,500. Use your negotiating skills for non prepaid taxis or autos. Public transportation is economical, Kadamba Transport buses' typical fares are Rs 3 for the first 2 km and then Rs 1 for each kilometre. Prices for travelling around Goa state by bus range from Rs 8 to 15 depending upon the destination. Negotiate the cost of travel before boarding for the least costly and most adventurous of options, the motorcycle taxi. Luxurious 4 and 5 star hotels start at Rs 4,000 and mid-range rooms cost around Rs 2,500. Basic affordable rooms are about Rs 700.
