Enjoying Kolkata's visual delights

Nicknamed the City of Palaces, Kolkata is a lively and enjoyable Indian metropolis. The city is one of the most popular local tourist destinations thanks in part to its cultural heritage. A trip to Kolkata would be incomplete without visiting a mixture of Indian and Raj attractions. Some of the most notable places of interest include the Howrah Bridge, the House of the Thakurs, Victoria Memorial, Park Street and the Indian Museum. 

The spectacular Howrah Bridge is an imposing abstraction of steel cantilevers. The architectural icon is one of the world's busiest bridges. Victoria Memorial is a vast magnificently proportioned structure reminiscent of the US Capitol. It features the Kolkata gallery and the central chamber. The memorial is surrounded by majestically reflecting ponds to create a picturesque view.    

Best time for Kolkata

To avoid the humid and suffocating Bengal summer, travel between October and March. The period is synonymous with pleasant weather and exciting festivities. Kolkata hosts a number of events around this time, including the Durga puja, Laxmi puja and the Diwali. The period June to September is the monsoon season; the temperatures plummet, but the humidity levels rise.

The city experiences heavy traffic for most of the day, make an effort to keep some extra time in hand. Congestions typically gets worse during the monsoon season. Wear comfortable outfits that are suitable for the season. Place vulnerable devices like phones and tablets in waterproof cases to prevent damage.

Important local information

There are a number of airport transfer options available to visitors arriving at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, including taxis and buses. One of the easiest and safest ways to the city centre is by taking a prepaid taxi. The bus terminus is located between the national and international terminal. Alternatively, you can avoid the hassle of public transportation by pre-booking a private air-conditioned shuttle service. 

Once you arrive in the city centre, you can opt for a rickshaw, bus, tram, ferry, train or car hire. Calcutta hosts a variety of accommodation establishments ranging from the luxurious to the quirky. The vast majority reflect the city's colonial charm. The most convenient locations to stay in the city centre include areas around Sudder Street and Park Street. Decent accommodation is costly whereas budget establishments located near Howrah station are often dismal. A number of budget hotels lock their gates by midnight for security reasons.
