Kochi at its best

Kochi has a tropical climate, with daytime temperatures between 30 and 35°C. Between the middle of May and September visitors should be prepared for the monsoons. From September until February you can expect it to be cool, windy and showery. Summer in Kochi runs from February until May and is usually humid, especially in March and April.

The busiest tourist season is between August and the month of February, of which December is the busiest.

The Onam harvest festival runs for 10 days starting in the middle of August and ends in the middle of September. Some of the city's multi-ethnic and religious festivals include Holi and Diwali (dates for these change each year). In Kochi Christmas (December 25th) and Easter (March/April - dates vary) are also celebrated. Islamic festivals include Eid ul-Fitr and Milad-e-sherif. The Cochin Carnival is in December and is a major festival with parades.

Kochi has a low cost of living. A full meal out might cost you 50 rupees or so. However, visitors can expect to pay a little more here for accommodation.

Local Information about getting around

The airport is 29 km out of central Kochi. Buses to the city centre are operated by KSRTC. These take and hour and forty minutes for the journey and cost about ₹80 (buses do have air conditioning). A taxi costs about ₹1200.

When looking for a room, consider a hostel, which costs only around 800 Rs. Kochi hotels in the medium price range can cost about 2,000 rupees. The Fort Cochin area is quiet with numerous boutique hotels. Willingdon Island tends to be more upmarket and Ernakulam City can accommodate all budgets.

When getting around, it's important to know that the ferry runs between Fort Kochi and the mainland (4 rupees Park Jetty to Fort Kochi). City buses cost around Rs 4 standard fare for the first kilometre. An auto rickshaw runs at Rs 10 or so for the first 1.25 km. Taxis cost about Rs 50 the first 3 km. Scooter hire typically runs from about ₹ 300 per day. Cycling is also a good option in Fort Kochi.
