A port lying on India's southwest Kerala state coastline, this wonderful city has lots to offer for travellers and explorers alike. Kerelan art is prevalent here as well as ancient mosques and old remains from the British Raj. The centre mainland is a busy hub, great for shopping while the older towns further out provide a much more relaxed experience.

When to head to Kochi

When you should travel to Kochi can be rather dependent on the weather you prefer. Kochi has a tropical climate and daytime temperatures can reach 30-35 degrees Celsius. Mid May to September is a time of monsoons, whereas September to February is milder with the occassional shower. February to May is their summer so it will be humid and hot. Peak travel season tends to be in August till February with December being particularly busy.

You may want to catch the Onam harvest festival which lasts 10 days from mid-August. Kochi is multi-ethnic and you'll see celebrations of Holi, Diwali on various dates, Christmas on 25th December and Easter in March/April. They also have Islamic festivals such as Eid and Milad-e-sherif on varying days and there's the Cochin Carnival in December.

Kochi has a low cost of living so you'll only spend around 50 rupees for a full meal out. However, accommodation prices can be higher compared to some other cities around India.

Transport and accommodation in Kochi

Central Kochi is around 29km from the airport. Buses are run by KSRTC, take around 1hour 40mins and cost roughly 80 Rupees, they have air conditioning. Or you can get a taxi for 1200 Rupees. A low-cost hotel will cost around 800 Rupees with a medium cost hotel being roughly 2000 Rupees. The Fort Cochin area is quiet with boutique hotels, Willingdon Island is upmarket and Ernakulam City caters for all budgets. There is a ferry between Fort Kochi and the mainland, it costs around 4 Rupees from Park Jetty to Fort Kochi. There are city buses which charge 4 Rupees or so for the first km of a journey. Auto rickshaws charge roughly 10 Rupees for the first 1.25km and taxis charge around 50 Rupees for the first 3km. You can also hire a scooter which will cost you around 300 Rupees a day or to get around Fort Kochi consider cycling.
