Kozhikode in Kerala
The city of Kozhikode is located in the state of Kerala in Southern India on the Malabar coastline. Kozhikode is well known for its fascinating history, culture as well as places of interest. Spend a day visiting Mananchira Square, Kallayi or take a boat trip down Conolly Canal. Shopping enthusiasts can enjoy a day out in the latest shopping precinct, Hilite Mall. Kozhikode - best season
The best time to travel to Kozhikode is from December to March. The weather at this time of year is mild with a humid and tropical climate. From March till May it's very hot, while June-September and October-November the monsoon season arrives. Enjoy the many holidays and festivals like Diwali at the end of October and Holi. The Shivarathri Utsavam Festival is held in Mahaganapathy Temple in October too. For five days in January there's the Malabar Mahotsavan that is host to music, drama and dance.
Travelling to Kozhikode you can expect delicious Malabar cuisine, for instance try Malabar Biriyani or Calicut Halwa. The cost of living in Kozhikode is cheap in comparison to Delhi. A basic meal in a restaurant will cost about 50 rupees, less than half the price as it would in Delhi.
Kozhikode - getting there
Calicut International Airport is around 28 km from Kozhikode in Karipur. Travelling from the airport to the city centre use the airport bus. The number 747 costs around RS 3-4 per km from Kondotty bus stand, 2 km from the airport itself. For accommodation, hotel rooms near the beach are more pleasant compared to the city centre where there is extremely heavy traffic. Budget accommodation will set you back approximately Rs 500 while luxury hotel rooms cost in the region of Rs 4,200. If you decide to use local transport expect to pay RS 7 for 3 km on buses, Rs 15 per km for rickshaws and taxis flat rates. There are also public transport air conditioned low floor and semi low floor buses which can take you to neighbouring areas.
