Kozhikode the "City of Spices" has an renowned history

The famous explorer, Marco Polo, described Kozhikode as the "great province of Malabar", in 1320 AD. This destination, which is situated in the state of Kerela, most certainly has a rich and glorious past, and Europeans enjoyed trading here, with spices, timber, ivory and commerce. Also known as Calicut, Kozhikode is still known for its flourishing trade in timber and tiles. Its spectacular wildlife sanctuaries, idyllic beaches, and historic sites, all combine to make this location an ideal place to visit.  

Timing your trip to Kozhikode 

Kozhikode is a great place to head for all year round for weather and events. If you are partial to mild weather, you should consider travelling between the months of December and March. The climate between March to May has a tropical feel, and is hot and humid. The Monsoon season occurs in June till September and then again in October till November. 

All of the general Hindu festivals are observed in Kozhikode, including Diwali, which occurs at the end of October, and Holi, the Festival of Colours. Shivarathri Utsavam is observed in October at the Mahaganapathy Temple. For 5 days in the month of January the city welcomes Malabar Mahotsavam, with spectacular dance drama and musical festivities. 

Tips to consider prior to travel

Malabar cuisine has a reputation for being very delicious, and Malabar Biriyani and Calicut Halwa are both worth trying.

The cost of living is considerably lower in Kozhikode, when compared to Delhi. For example, eating out at a restaurant in Kozhikode will cost you around 50 rupees, which is less than half the price that you will pay in Delhi restaurants. 

Advice on local public transport

Calicut International Airport, in Karipur, is approximately 28 km out of Kozhikode. Take the 747 airport bus to the city centre for around Rx.3-4 per km. Board at the Kondotty bus stand, situated about 2 km from the airport. 

Traffic in the city is quite heavy, therefore beach front hotel rooms are the most pleasant to stay in. Budget accommodation costs around Rs500 and luxury hotel rooms are approximately Rs4,200. 

Choose between buses, rickshaws, and taxis to travel around the city. Buses cost around Rs7 for every 3 km, and rickshaws are around Rs15 per km. All taxis charge a flat rate.
