When thinking about when to go to Mumbai you'll want to keep in mind the weather, visiting in winter is best when temperatures are between 17-30 degrees, this from November to February. Avoid monsoon season flooding from June to September. You may want your plans to coincide with festivals such as Holi, celebrated on the full moon in March. Ganesh Chaturthi in August/September and Diwali, the festival of lights in October which has fireworks and more.

Smog is common in the dry season, it may be best avoided if you have asthma or related problems. There are ATMs in the International Airport. A basic meal will cost you around 200Rs, this is less than Delhi but more than other places like Kolkata.

The Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is located 28 km from the city centre. You can get prepaid taxis from between around 450Rs and 600Rs. The 337 or 308 bus can be caught from from level 6 departures, taking you to to Andheri station for about 14Rs, you can then walk to train station and take the blue Harbour line to the CST station for around 10Rs. 

You can find budget guest houses in South Mumbai or Colaba or near railway stations. Accommodation in Mumbai is expensive compared to the rest of India. A hostel dorm bed will cost around 250 Rs. 3 star hotels on the other hand will cost from about 4000 Rs.

Travelling around Mumbia you'll find that taxis are cheap, the minimum fare is 21 Rs for the initial 1.5 km and then 1 Rs for every 100 metres after that. Suburban trains are very crowded during rush hour so you might want to avoid them at that time. A day pass for the bus is around 70 Rs and you'll need a smart photo ID card. There are no autos in downtown Mumbai. Minimum fare is around 15RS, the first 1.5 km cost about 17Rs then 1 Rs p/km.
