The city is an excellent choice for breaks at any time of year and has a moderate climate. In winter, days tend to be shorter and 8 hours of daylight is normal in mid-December.

Visitors come for King's Day (Koningsdag) which is normally 27th April unless it happens to fall on a Sunday. If this is the case then celebrations take place the previous day. Bevrijdingsdag which celebrates the end of wartime occupation by Nazi Germany is always on 5th May. Plan a stay in spring to see the famous tulips.

There is a free ferry, "het pontje", that takes passengers across the Ij to NDSM, once a working wharf and now a thriving cultural centre.

The city is fairly expensive, particularly in areas close to major tourist attractions and a basic meal might cost around EUR15.

Schiphol Airport is about 5 miles from central Amsterdam. The airport has its own railway station travellers can reach the city centre by train in about 5 minutes. A single ticket is about EUR4. The 197 bus takes about 35 minutes from the airport to Leidseplein. Taxis charge about EUR50 for the trip.

Cheap hostels in Amsterdam start from about EUR20 per night for shared rooms while hotels start at around EUR45.

Taxis in Amsterdam are expensive with a 10-minute journey costing about EUR15 - 20.

Visitors can purchase a 24h day ticket for use on public transport for around EUR8 for adults or EUR3 for children aged 4-11. Trams sell tickets for single journeys.
